| Let me bid you a warm welcome to www.classicsillustratedjuniors.com - a website and business dedicated to providing information and reference material as well as supplying some of the loveliest comic books produced. |
Here you will find background information on the comics that were produced in this series and you will also be able to purchase them via the sales catalogue and shopping cart. Here you will also be able to see today’s prices for those rare issues and you may well find that you wished that you had kept and cherished them all those years ago, if you once owned them.
Next to Classics Illustrated, the Juniors series was the most successful and, as could be deduced, they depicted Fairy and Folk Tales. The series was published by Famous Authors Ltd. - the Company that the father of the Classics Illustrated series, Albert Kanter, had bought out when it produced competitive comics under the Fast Fiction (and later Stories By Famous Authors) banner - see www.storiesbyfamousauthors.com . They first appeared in October 1953 (number 501 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves) and were generally issued monthly until the 76th issue, The Princess Who Saw Everything, in June 1962 when they ceased except for one more from the Frawley ownership of the late ‘sixties, The Runaway Dumpling, number 577, in 1969.
The series was very popular and it has been asserted that it led the sales lists of all Children’s books, as opposed to simply comic books. The publishers reported that there was an average monthly circulation of over 250,000 in 1960. There was even an LP record to accompany the series see picture below… A Television series was planned but didn’t reach the screen. Some of the artists of the CI series also worked on the Juniors, including Alex A. Blum, who illustrated the first issue and 507 - Jack and The Beanstalk. One of the artists was Dik Browne who might be better known as the creator of Hagar the Horrible! Having disappeared in 1971 the series is now being reproduced by Jack Lake publications in Canada - although for the purist a Classics Illustrated comic with a bar code looks strangely incongruous.
